Not All “Plant-Based” Diets Support Brain Health (Here’s What Actually Matters)
April 11, 2026
If you’ve been trying to eat more “plant-based” for your health, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common nutrition goals I hear from clients, and for good reason.
But here’s the part that often gets missed:
Not all plant-based diets are equally supportive of brain health.
A new large study adds an important layer of nuance to this conversation, and it challenges the idea that simply eating “plant-based” is enough.
The Study Everyone Is Talking About
Researchers followed nearly 93,000 adults over 11 years, looking at how different types of plant-based diets related to the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
At first glance, the message seems simple:
More plant-based eating = better brain health
But when you look closer, the real takeaway is much more useful—and more realistic.
👉 It’s not about whether your diet is plant-based. It’s about the quality of those plant foods.
I break down the full study (including its strengths and limitations) in my Psychology Today article here: Not All “Plant-Based” Diets Are Equal for Brain Health | Psychology Today
